How To Be A Non Grown Up Part III: Be Creative

BeCreative Postit

When being creative, it always helps to not follow the rules (see Part II). Creativity is just trying something in a different, maybe even weird-way, that usually goes against the norm. This is how you can recognize creativity. The greater the creativity the greater the outside opposition will be to it & the more butterflies you will feel in your stomach. I was 2 when I created ‘Windows’ :medium Pink Puppy Wallpaper & Permanent Black Marker: size 4×3’ much to my Mother’s horror. I was forced to scrub off my banksey-like act, but I knew from that day forward no matter the cost, I always wanted to be creative. The best part about creativity is that it’s FUN!

Creativity is about problem solving & building. Lego toys are a great visual and metaphoric representation of the idea of creativity. You will always have limited resources, with legos it’s color, shape, amount and time. What you build with what you have involves your creativity. If I want a castle, a pet store, a monster… I can make it. If you have A and you want to get to B, take inventory and problem solve, get the piece you need, place the 1st building block and repeat.

How can I be creative?:

• Add ‘upside-down’ to a *regular activity (*maybe not eating, but anything else)

• Allow time for inspiration-go for a walk

• Think of something fun you wanted to do as a kid • Understand there are no wrong answers

• Put all your clothes on backwards

• Make something with your hands

• Do anything you want! Use your imagination! Keep adding more to this list…

Remember to look up. Ever notice you haven’t looked up since you were a kid? We spend so much time looking down at our phones, at our kids, at our feet to avoid making eye contact, that we forget there is a whole other world above 6ft. There is only a small area you can see when you look down, you see so much more the higher you look and it may even solve a problem. In many old buildings plugs are high up on a wall close to the ceiling, and when you have 10 people looking for a plug to hook up equipment for an event that is starting in an hour, you might want to look up (true story).

Imagination becomes reality. Whatever you want in life you have to imagine fist. And to imagine it you need to use your creativity. The things you think in your head can all become reality. Remember Star Trek, with the ‘automatic’ doors two people were moving with there hands, ‘communicators’, ‘replicators’-these were all from Gene Roddenberry’s imagination, and now they’re real things that we use everyday.

Won’t people think I’m a weirdo if I am being creative all the time??? I hope they do! This is good gauge as to how creative you are being. The more outside opposition you have, usually = the amount of creative you are being. Think about how many people hate Star Trek ( sorry Gene. If you always think outside the box you will be a catalyst for change, and the next thing you will notice is the increase of creativity in others around you. Remember-you can accomplish anything imaginable over time. Never let what anyone says stop you from being creative.

There are only three rules to Being Creative Always:

Rule I Never Follow Rules, sometimes intentionally break them

Rule 2 Take equal time to get inspired as you spend on being creative.

Rule 3 Why are you still reading this go be creative!
