How to be a Successful Non Grown Up (NGU) Part VIII:Be What Ever You Want
Sometimes when people say just be yourself, I’m like ‘What? How can I not be myself?’ I’m always myself, just in different situations. Like ‘Business me’, ‘Party me’, ‘Responsible me’ ‘Anarchist me’. It’s just so much better to be what ever you want! Like instead of being ‘myself’ in a situation that would cause anxiety, why couldn’t I be Wonder Woman? If I have to make a phone call why can’t I be British? If I need to go to the dentist, why can’t I be an astronaut exploring a new planet or a documentary filmmaker scoping out a location? Being yourself is great if “yourself” is the best person for the situation, but when life gives you lemons-Cosplay!
Things you can be with or without a costume:
- A Superhero’s Secret Identity
- An Undercover Inspector
- Spy (of course)
- A Monk Who’s taken a Vow of Silence
- An Alien who must pretend they are Human to “fit in”
- A Famous singer or Actress who is hiding from Paparazzi (*You need Big sunglasses for this one, and a wig would help too.)

Be What Ever You want for a Living. When I was younger I wanted to be a Marine Biologist (of course), my brother wanted to be a GIRAFFE! My sister wanted to be a Roman Catholic priest (because she only wanted to work on Sundays), my parents never said we couldn’t. My point is: you CAN be a giraffe or a priest if you want! I thought I needed a sensible career and started out in school to be a scientist, when I really wanted to be an artist. I would like to say I quit, but I was asked to leave school, I went on to become a very successful animator, comic illustrator, teacher, podcaster and artist, as well as an unsuccessful door-to-door knife salesman, waitress and telemarketer! You can try one thing, and then you can do another, it’s OK to be a priest AND a giraffe! *Note- it is easier to pretend to be something you love than it is to be a scientist.
You are Everything Around You. Everyone is an amalgamation of the things around them, influencing their lives and experiences. You are a part of everyone and everything that has touched your life. That’s YOU! So the trick is that anything you pretend to be-that’s YOU TOO!!! If I want to be me with a British accent, a moustache, and a monocle-that’s still ME! The other trick is you can leave things behind. Like sometimes I don’t wear a fake moustache, and it’s still me! Sometimes you’re not little miss sunshine, and that is still you, and that is OK too!
Pretending is not Just for Kids and Improvists. Using your imagination is how you get ahead in life. Fake it till you make it. It means ‘pretend’ you are what you want to be. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds. It is good to have a role model in you head when pretending. Then you can be like WW so-and-so D. Sometimes I have even been know to *pretend I am a grown up! I can talk exasperatingly about the weather and how weathery it is outside- like nobodies business!
The most boring game of pretend ever, I do not recommend!
Tips for Being Whatever You Want:
1 Find something you want to be-then be that!
2 Pretending is way easier when you love the thing you’re pretending to be.
3 Be what you want for fun! NEVER because anyone else wants you to pretend. That is called ‘acting’ and people get paid to do that.
