The Scoop SF: Scratch

Yes, Scratch also as a vegetarian menu for those “Veggie Only” Folks!

While SF is considered the popular area of  the Bay Area, many of us residents live in the South Bay.  One of the most exciting foodie streets in the South Bay is Castro Street.  Located in the heart of Mountain View, Castro Street can transform from a Saturday casual brunch spot filled with used bookstores and afternoon Dim Sum to a South Bay hip area for nighttime foodies.  This past weekend, I scored a reservation at Scratch. The atmosphere is definitely modern meets Brooklyn Hipster. The first thing you see when you walk into the building is the restaurant’s amazing circular bar, with all of the adult liquids delicately displayed in the center.

For God so loved the world, He created the pork belly and it reign(th) forever and ever

Each table has it’s own mini chandelier that gives the environment a very intimate feel.  I started with the Carolina BBQ Pork Belly with Bacon cheddar biscuits.  As a self titled BBQ Connoisseur and a Mid West girl, I am very critical of BBQ, especially in California.  I have been to so many “BBQ spots” in the Bay and I can count on my hand the ones that actually of descent BBQ.  But this Carolina Pork Belly was incredible.  It wasn’t as BBQ-y as I had hoped but the slow roasted meat, along with the Bacon cheddar biscuits it the spot!  It is also the most popular appetizer on the menu, according to my waiter.

Short Ribs & Tomato Polenta

I ordered the Beef Short Ribs for dinner and my foodie partner-in -crime ordered the Fried Chicken, which was perfect for sharing.  I was skeptical of my food choice because of the sides that came with the meal.  I am all for beef anything, so the meat wasn’t the concern.  It was the sides – blackened tomato polenta, wild mushrooms, and artichokes. I don’t usually think of polenta when I think of ribs, but there is a first time for everything. While the short rib was between average and excellent, the sides were FANTASTIC and I wiped my plate clean with them.  My foodie partner enjoyed the fried chicken as well.

If you are ever in the Mountain View area, I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.  The atmosphere, the young professional crowd and the appetizers are a must!  Remember to grab a drink and try the desserts as well (The Elvis Sundae was delicious).
